Sustainability

BrandActiv has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to sustainability, consistently striving to enhance our practices over the years. In 2020, we took a significant step by conducting a comprehensive assessment of our core businesses. This evaluation was pivotal in understanding our current operations and identifying key areas where we could further strengthen our sustainability efforts.

In 2021, the focus was on finalizing our radar and identifying 2 key materiality issues: Waste and Climate. Materiality is an essential concept in sustainability, as it helps us prioritize the issues that have the most significant impact on our business and stakeholders. By identifying these material issues, we can ensure that our efforts are targeted and effective.

Resikle an bote ek Garnier

To strengthen our commitment to environmental protection and create durable momentum, BrandActiv has successfully launched the first cosmetics recycling campaign in Mauritius called "Resikle an bote ek Garnier." Garnier Eco Boxes were placed in several supermarkets across the island, providing customers with a convenient way to dispose of their empty Garnier bottles, and we have collected over 100kg of plastic bottles since the campaign's launch in August 2023.

We are thrilled with the positive response we have received from the community so far. A hundred of bottles are recycled by Mission Verte and transformed into keyrings. The remaining bottles are handed over to the company Recyclar, which exports them to Madagascar. Once there, they are recycled into various items such as watering cans and plant pots.

GHG carbon accounting

In collaboration with the head office, we have begun the process of collecting comprehensive data for carbon accounting purposes. This significant step forward will enable us to gain a better understanding of our carbon emissions and subsequently, take meaningful action to reduce our environmental impact.

Our ultimate vision is to decarbonise our value chain, and this initiative marks a pivotal step in that direction. By collecting and analysing this data, we aim to identify key areas where we can implement effective strategies to minimise our carbon footprint and contribute to a more responsible future.

Awareness sessions

Sustainability is a journey that requires continuous learning and improvement. In October 2023, we organized a series of awareness sessions, allowing our employees to gain a better understanding of our transformation and the positive changes we can make as individuals and as a company.

Waste sorting

We firmly believe that every small gesture counts and that our collective contribution can make a purposeful difference. We’ve introduced selective sorting on our premises, which involves recycling paper, cardboard, plastic, and metal. By actively participating in selective sorting, we aim to contribute to the preservation of our island and encourage our employees to embrace a more responsible lifestyle. Since implementing this program, we have successfully recycled 150kg of materials. Paper and cardboard are deposited at Wecycle, where they are recycled into egg cartons and kraft paper.

PET plastic, primarily drink bottles, is processed by Polypet Recyclers locally and then exported to South Africa to be turned into items such as filling for soft toys, duvets, cushions, and fleece clothing. For HDPE and PP plastics, GNG Recyclers produce plant pots, while Surfrider creates outdoor furniture like benches and tables. In addition, we have established partnerships with RVE, BEM Recycling, Mission Verte, and Surfrider to recycle our other general waste.

World Environment Day

This year, in celebration of World Environment Day, the sustainability champions of BrandActiv, Manser Saxon, Blychem, and Somatrans organised a domestic e-waste recycling campaign for all their employees. We are delighted to share that we collected a total of more than 700kg of e-waste, all of which has been successfully recycled without ending up in landfills. This was made possible through our partnership with RVE Ltd, a French company from Réunion Island, specialising in the collection, treatment, and recovery of WEEE. RVE Ltd also operates a branch in Mauritius, Vacoas, where the components are separated and dismantled.

The metal, cardboard, and plastic components are sent to respective recyclers (Metal: TNY Ltd, Cardboard: Mafta International Ltd, Plastic: PIM Ltd), while the remainder is exported to RVE's parent company in Réunion for further recycling processes. Additionally, we organised a clothing donation drive as part of the event. The generous contributions from our colleagues have been distributed to the beneficiaries of Les Cuisines Solidaires and Mam San Baz, supporting communities in need and promoting a culture of giving.

We remain humble about the progress we have made so far, and we actively seek opportunities to integrate value creation into our day-to-day operations. Together, we can make a significant impact and contribute towards a more hopeful future. We continue to build on this momentum and drive positive change within our organisation.
